Course Outcome

The Department of English offers both Honours and Programme courses. The Honours course is designed to give students an overview of the various significant literary movements that have influenced the development of English Literature.

The Programme course aims to give students a grasp on English grammar with a focus on enhancing communication skills. Along with this, the course is designed to expose students to English literature both from the classic canon and the more contemporary developments.

Through close readings of representative texts, students learn the process of literary critique and analysis. Keeping in mind the changing nature of the scope of literary studies, the syllabus has been designed so as to provide students with exposure to more recent developments such as Film Studies and literary studies of Popular fiction with significant focus being laid on notable genres such as Detective fiction or Science fiction. Students learn literary analysis by practicing it in their textual readings in courses on Women’s Writing, Postcolonial literatures, Partition Literature and so on. While the Honours course is designed to provide students with the tools to pursue higher studies in the discipline and a career in teaching and academics, there is a range of alternate job opportunities available as well. This is particularly true in the fields of Mass Communication, Journalism, Digital marketing, content creation and editing, translating and interpreting, etc.

Guidance for Exam

The Department of English in our college attempts to provide students with the tools to analyse literary texts beyond the demands of the examination. However, classes are also designed keeping in mind the necessities of preparing students for the examination. Thus, importance is given to holding oral quizzes and discussions on the texts being taught. Periodic tests are taken to evaluate their progress.  Students are made to write short project-based essays as term papers or assignments. Library work is encouraged so that students can come up with more well-rounded knowledge on the texts that are part of the syllabus.

Furthermore, special lectures are held by guest faculty from other colleges to provide students with greater exposure that can enrich their knowledge on a specific topic. Finally, mock examinations that are designed in accordance with the University examination format are arranged for students.
